I Still Believe That GACC2007 Pwned Other Events
Currently listening to “Ragnarok Online II Opening” by “Yoko Kanno” ( The OST is TOO good )
Currently waiting for lunch
Read the title, yes. I still believe that GACC2007 pwned other events in MMU this year ( can’t say all time since “Converse 2004″ is ZOMGly too good from the news itself ). I went to Japanese Cultural Night (JCN) last night and it’s… well, it’s unsurprisingly boring, honestly. Sorry Jeff. Although it’s boring, it’s not entirely boring. There’s some parts of it that’s good. Well, dun wan to kutuk other people’s event.
I’m not bragging here. Of course, I will say it’s good because it’s my event. But, it seems that people who ALWAYS kutuk me all the time are extremely impressed with GACC2007 too. Even some rocker who’s not interested in anime at all are extremely impressed ( he came just wanna see Carl perform, that’s all and got stuck there after that… )
First i wanna make it clear. I’m not comparing JCN with GACC2007. It’s a totally different thing. JCN is a one night show, GACC2007 is a whole day informal event. I’m using JCN as a reference only.
Things that make events look good:
First, the target audience. JCN is targeted for random people most probably because they wanna spread awareness ’bout the Japanese culture. Well, GACC2007 have the same motive too but in a different way. We targeted specific people in order to make the event successful. After it’s successful then the “spread awareness” come thru the successfulness of the event. Too bad they only know it thru news and all. Hope they come next year and see it for themselves.
And yep, my theory of “Formality kills events” is proven. Still remember my speech during GACC2007? It was like.. er.. less than 2 minutes? It’s short and nice ( and absolutely contentlessly pointless. lol. ). Usually, in speeches, the director will tell other the blood and sweat they squeezed out to make the event happen and the objective of the event. The VIP will make a speech about how impressed he is about the event and encourage others to do more events like this. Bla bla bla. If it’s short, most probably crowd will pay attention no matter how boring it is. If it’s long, most probably crowd will loose their attention no matter how interesting it is. Remember, crowd is there because of the show, not speeches. JCN have a different case though. One of the VIP had his speech in Japanese and it’s very long. I can’t really comment on it no matter how clueless the crowd are at that time since it is a “Japanese” Cultural Night, although the Japanese usage there is too excessive. Bon Odori’s is different case, there’s lotsa Japanese people there.
Prom is formal? That’s different dude. People are expecting it to be formal.
Then, there comes the officiation of an event:
Officiation of an event… A must for some event just because of “perfecting” an event. Don’t get confused, Officiation is not “Opening Ceremony”. Officiation is part of “Opening Ceremony”. The real hidden objective of this “officiation” thingamajig is basically just wanna make some VIP feels important. That’s all. Okay, here’s the thing. Officiation is typically boring and seems useless to the crowd. When I do events, i put crowd in my top priority, not VIPs.
Here are the normal officiation i’ve seen so far done in MMU: “Touch a holographic globe”, “Cut ribbon”, “ketuk Gong” or “Press Spacebar”. In crowd’s shoe, most probably I want everything to end quick. Really quick… and get the show started already.
Now, let’s look at MTV awards ( man.. I hate MTV SO MUCH, but I love MTV Awards SO MUCH ). Their opening is like uber cool without officiation. Of course, we can’t do that in MMU. In MMU, it’s proper to have an officiation. Now, you know where I got the idea of the opening ceremony flows, ey? Thanks MTV, I hate your shows but I love your awards.
Back to the officiation thingamajig. Since we MUST have an officiation, why not make it cool?
Hence, the opening video. Me and Loo Mun wanted Mr. Syukor to snap his finger toward the projector screen right after he finish his speech, then we really ask him to do that. But, he forgot to do that. Ceh.
After is officiation is completed in a cool way, the crowd’s morale will be boosted up. They will start assuming that the show after that is going to be cooler ( although it’s going to suck badly after that… lol ).
Then, there’s the “show control”. If the show is boring, might as well don’t have it at all. Okay, I admit. I suck in singing and please scrap that out. There’s a special reason to it.
Important rule that I’ve learn back in high school: “Nice and short”. I bet nearly everyone knows this. You’ve seen the Mario performance in GACC2007? Do you know that it’s originally 15 minutes long? I went WTF when the director of the Mario show told me. But in the end, they cut it short, not because of i told em to cut it short but they had to because there’s too many flaws in the show so they focus on perfecting a short act.
Back in High School, me and Khurshid co-directed a student drama for teacher’s day. Originally it’s Godlike boring until a Form 6 dude came and “save” the show. The entire script was trashed and whole 2 weeks of practice gone to waste 24 hours before the show. Yep, re-do everything from the scratch a day before the show. In the end, the 10 minute show went well. The students enjoyed it but the teachers of course, are asses and expecting something better.
Never ever think of putting something lame to kill time. If you want the whole event to end at a specific time, too bad. You just have to end it early then. Who with me agreeing that the “Old Skool Rockers” performance sucks in GACC2007? Actually, they don’t suck, they are just out of place, which is not good. Again, “target audience”.
Spreading “objective” thru show is not top priority not matter how important the “objective” is. Again, people come to be entertained, especially when they pay for the ticket. JCN’s ninjutsu demonstration is good because they “spread awareness” thru a drama-like presentation. JCN’s Aikido demonstration is totally boring because they don’t show it in a entertaining way ( It’s a sparring session… on a stage. You’ll see them knocking their partners down over.. and over.. and over again… ).
You’ve been to Bon Odori? Have you seen the Malaysian cultural dance they perform there? I find it boring because I’ve seen it like.. lotsa times. Why izzit there then? “Spread Awareness”.
It’s not easy to entertain the crowd. The crowd always want something that’s REALLY GOOD that would make them cry although they are not expecting it. Since it’s not easy, so we always try our best to make them “cry”. Yeah, that’s it : “TRY”. If you wanna go with the protocol flow, make sure the protocol in executed in a very entertaining way. I can say that GACC2007′s is done in a really interesting way. Don’t even say “too bad, protocols”.
Again, I want to congratulate GACC2007 committees for making me feel this is the best event ever done in MMU this year. You all make me proud to be the president of this one small insignificant club in campus. Other organizers might not say this but hey, we entertained our crowd to the max. We don’t care how much you work on your event if it doesn’t entertain your crowd well. We don’t care that you invited the Prime Minister of Malaysia because we know that he’s insignificant to the crowd and not contributing any “good” to the show. Unless he’s a star like Lee Hom, Too Phat, Nowseeheart or.. Toru Furuya >:)
Sigh. Let me summarize the whole post: “GACC RAWKS”
>:)
*edit*
Okay, i forgot something. This only applies to “entertainment” based events. Please don’t include talks, quiz, or sports event. Some “competitions” based event applied too.

yea.. GACC rawkz. Hopefully it will win the best event award :)
Yeah. It’s awesome.
Too bad most probably we can’t win the award because of the scoring scheme. The event successfulness doesn’t really count much.
One of the criteria is how “powerful” the VIP is. Maaya Sakamoto is nothing compared to the Ministry of Education Head. This is because, Maaya is just a pop star but the MoE Head approves our education accreditation and bla bla bla.
Outsiders participation also counts. CLS’s Dance competition involved lotsa schools and IVAQ involved lotsa universities. We do have outsiders participations but as individuals not groups. Err.. CF kids doesn’t count…
Those 2 points alone beat us flat. Darn.
But who cares if we will not win. Just as long we know at heart that we owned other event, it’s good. Coz we know there are others out there who thinks the same.
GACC RAWKS!
..l.. MMU
GACC rocks you better award the event this year.
As I see, I guess JCN is quite worthy to be mentioned on your blog.
GACC also is a great event too.
XD
*heart* GACC so much….it rocks!!
Har har…sorry that JCN sucks (-.-”)
