Vista and Vista’s Launch
Currently listening to “A Song For James” by ELLEGARDEN again
Currently waiting for someone
Last month, there was a Microsoft Vista Campus Launch event in MMU Cyberjaya campus where they give out Windows Vista for free to all students. From what I’ve heard, the management sucks.
Err.. ok
Well yesterday, it’s Melaka Campus’ turn. Uh-huh. Guess wat, they equally “suck”. Here’s the thing.
1. There’s ZERO information about it in bulletin board.
2. The promotion booth, is ULTIMATELY hidden… camouflaged by a student hotdog stall.
3. “Free Vista to All” – FIST Students get “Business Edition”, other students get “Home Basic” / “Not-worth-to-upgrade” Edition.
4. I hate Smith Ang – the most retarded leader I’ve ever seen.
Okay, there’s only ONE thing in my head – “Get teh Free Vista Business Edition”
In order to do that, one must go register themselves to the “ultimately” hidden booth. Once you found the booth, you’ll know your fate – whether you’re a FIST student or not. If you’re not – no Business edition for you. If you are, congratulations, you’re entitled to own a free vista. Now pay RM30 bucks.
Yes, you need to pay RM30 ( let’s not discuss whether they really understand the concept of “free” or not ). They’ll give you a tshirt and a receipt. On the event day itself, i MUST wear that tshirt and bring the receipt.
I came early and waited there and went thru the opening ceremony and all. Then comes a very very interesting part: A quiz – where one could win Windows Vista ULTIMATE Edition. “Ultimate” edition is like the pizza of Windows Vista where other edition is like Nasi Lemak or Karipap.
Okay, now I got 2 things in mind : 1) Get the “free” vista. 2) Get teh Ultimate Version.
The quiz is a puzzle. For a techie like me, I can say it’s really easy. Too bad my luck is just not there. Darn, there goes my “Ultimate”.
After nearly 2 hours being there, finally it’s the “collection” time. Lotsa people, one single line. One single SLOW line. Wow, I tawt we entered the multi-core processor age already?
Okay, let’s not complain that much, at least i got my “free” Business edition Vista. Eh? Wat? Yeah, I’m not FIST student but still get “Business” edition. Coz… my metric card says “Information Technology”. >:) So, they assume that I’m a FIST student. Well, one of the committees told me that just as long my metric card says “Information Technology”, it’s kewl…
So, yeah. After I got my copy, being the impatient me, I straight away install it in a new disk partition. After installation, Vista kicks in.
For a techie, you’ll start to “oooh” and “ahhh” over lotsa things ( new security feature, search feature, networking, virtual folders, bla bla ). For non-techies… you’ll only “oohhh” at this:
Wow. 3D Flip thru windows. It looks absolutely awesome, trust me. But it’s really not practical, trust me. It supposed to help browse your windows while being able to see the contents of the window. I still love Apple’s “Expose” where all the windows will shrink nicely so you can see all windows at the same time. Ok… bottomline is, for non-techies, you will only see cosmetic upgrades only.
Hence, I strongly recommend casual users NOT to upgrade to Vista. Really, there’s nothing wrong staying with XP for another year ( in fact, I recommend you to stick with XP for now ).

Non-FIST students are only eligible for Home Basic?
Here in Cyberjaya, ALL students (and staff) are eligible for Business Edition no matter from which faculty they came from. The only freebies that FIT exclusive here are Visual Studio Express installer disc, which I can download from Microsoft’s site for free, and it’s legal to do so.
The only thing we have to pay for is the blank DVD for them to burn you a copy of Vista’s installation disc. The only catch is, before we can get our Vista, we have to go to different booths, play some mini-game, and collect 5 stamps. The queue on each booth is insanely long.

Em, quite agree what you said, especially the worst leader part. You talk like Vista is nothing, but people still crazy with it… include me. Started to chase Vista news 2 years ago.

Actually everybody get Business Edition, just FIST students get it with CD-Key, while non-FIST students just get DVD, entitle for them to use 120 days without activation (which is the period that most non-techie students will format their PC)

Zaidi: At first, i tawt they’re going to give Business edition to all too, but they phailed me miserably..
Jason: Yep, eye-candies…
Imie: Can’t fully agree to that. Getting “expensive” Vista business edition for RM30 is quite worth it i say..
Kid: Yeah, stick with XP. But Vista loads faster than XP though.
Vhanded: I used to craze Vista ( back then codename Longhorn ) like crazy. Then i slowly lost interest in it due to Microsoft’s empty promises and they drop lotsa neat features.
Yuhi: If you know how to use Linux, yeah, better switch to Ubuntu.
BlackHowling: XP SP2 FTW… for now. Lol.

Ultimate Vista user since Beta 2 and running tons of testing in production environment in RTM Vista…
One word….it feel good to use vista…if your application is working fine…
Outlook load in second, Full index search OS, Terminal Service 6.0 and extremely good memory usage (make full use of your memory)
Vista is worth the upgrade, if you are business user, i use my Vista more often than my XP now…for those application that doesn’t work, i remote desktop into my XP machine and run it over there, neat right?
Recommend vista for those who have more than 1 screen (me~), non-gamer…
Gamer? Let just wait for a really working driver come out for Vista first :)

Seiijuu and retarded.fela.com owner:
You emailed FIST this link, my email and my “Kheirul Aizat bin Kheirudin Pious”. And… ? You gonna make sure my key blocked and deleted? then.. smiles..
You’re pissed because your event sucks and you don’t want people to say it suck?
Here’s the thing that you don’t know : I do KNOW how they work… and it’s done without the “ass off” thingamajig.
Judging from your website address alone, i think that “retarded.fela.com” really suits you well.
Sigh. Ok, lemme tell you something: “You don’t really know what ‘work ass off’ really means”. And please, don’t simply simple use that term on easy stuff.
I could go out and buy my mom a Mother’s Day present and tell my mom “I worked my ass of trying to choose a suitable present”. This is a simple event. It’s not hard. I can even direct this small event myself better and more “gilang gemilang”.
Your event sucks. I won’t blame the committees ( includes you IF you’re one of the committees ). I blame the director, Smith Ang. If you’re Smith Ang, i am so sorry to say this : “You suck as a leader”.
You see, when an event sucks, just admit it. That’s why you have post-mortem. Improve next time.
And why did he LOOOOVES to do thing last minute? When shit happens, everything goes to the committee. Oh, i know him well for years. I know the previous president and the founder of IT Society better than him and he just phailed.
The launch is a really simple event. There are other events who deserves this “worked ass off” phrase like Chinese Cultural Corridor event. They really WORK THEIR ASS OFF and they deserve the compliments they get… and also the award.
DO YOU KNOW how they worked their ass off compared to this event? Not even close.
Stop hoping SO MUCH. Try to be pessimists sometimes to organize an event. SHIT WILL HAPPEN, and try to evade that shit. Think! Think! Think!
Just because you know that lotsa student wants free vista, you’re hoping them to bow down to you all like Gods?
And yeah, YES, I’m ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT no one is asking to upgrade their rig to vista. What kind of a stupid sentence is that? Eveeeerybody knows that.
Nice joke there: Track your IP? Who will bother? “Multiple proxy”? Yes, we know that you study datacom. I’m impressed. We are ALL impressed. You could even be a hacker.
THAT EVENT SUCKS. PERIOD.
So, moral of the story is: Accept your mistakes, improve in the future.
“Life can be only understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.”
– Søren Kierkegaard
PS: Kids these days, sigh. n00bs.
PS2: If you’re a committee, we know it’s not your fault. Yes, “WE”. “WE” know who’s the real culprit.
PS3: Visited next-boards lately?
