Edo, FYP, Pangea Day, Ocha! and Fansubbing

Currently listening to “BANANA to BUTTERFLY” by Veltpunch
Currently forcing self to write something here.
Mr. Kheirul Aizat… is still alive! but the blog’s seems dead.
No, not that there’s nothing interesting happened lately ( there’s a lot actually ), it’s just that I’m kinda lazy, as always.
Final Year Project Stories
Yeah.. the final year project competition. We won, and I totally didn’t expect it.
My groupmates were Yuhi and Adib. I did all of the system and leave the paperworks to them. I hate paperworks. They gave me contents for the site too.
My FYP was simple : A Full Flash Movie Website. Instead of making a heavy loaded flashy flash site, we did something else : A lightweight flash website without sacrificing the flashy-ness. I implemented a lot of illusion tricks to make it look heavy ( not that hard thing to do ). Mr Suhaimi HATES IT ( one of presentation’s panel ). He said that our website was too simple and it doesn’t look like a 3 month’s worth of work. Ok, I admit, the whole site “can” be done within a week.
The point was: what we trying to prove and we accomplished it, and it made sense. I did the website fully based on visitors point of view, based on what they want. I’m not making a website that shows how L337 my skillz0rz are. I really felt there’s no point of making a heavy loaded flash website when the visitors just want “infos”. “Functionality”? Not that much, since it’s IT’S JUST A MOVIE WEBSITE.
The categories in the competition are : Best IT [ (Best Multimedia, Best Website) Best Booth, Best Supervisor ) and Best Engineering [ Best Engineering, Best Booth, Best Supervisor ]. I’m competing for Best Multimedia, not Website ( website are for those who did “online registration”, “online booking”, “online music store” and the like ). We won best IT overall, Best Multimedia and we helped our cute supervisor to win Best Supervisor, i think..
Only 5 groups from Multimedia can enter the finals, and we did, although final presentation before the competition sucked ( final presentation and competition presentation are 2 different things ). Why did we managed to enter? Because there’s only 5 groups. So all qualified to entered the competition, lol. Different case for IT and Engineering, cause they have lotsa teams.
So, in the competition, they gave us a booth and asked us to deco-it-up and present our project well there. Oh, there’s best booth competition too which I don’t care too ( although my groupmates care a bit ). So, here’s how other booths look like:
They have flowers, balloons and all. Pretty nice setup. Same goes to others, and it quite obvious that everybody trying to win the Best Booth award. My neighbouring group ( 2nd image ) offered drink and snacks at their booth. So overall, everyone really showed their effort on their booth deco, and it looked quite nice. My neighbour won the Best Booth. Ours? Well…
Yeah. It sucked. Because we lazy. We bought few large polystyrene, wrapped it with black cloth and pasted few “papers” on it. On the booth, just my monitor, speakers, and mouse ( hid keyboard behind ). We use “simplicity” as our excuse… since our website is simple too. Lol. Confirmed, we won the Pathetic Booth award.
The projects. All 5 multimedia groups made their project with flash. In terms of design, honestly it was horrible compared to ours. But, in terms of functionally, they PWNED us big time in my point of view. Why? Because their system is complicated which involves more coding. They did ‘Trivia Games’, ‘Virtual Tours’ and ‘State Tour Website’. When I take a look tour at their project, in functionally terms, they’re quite impressive. I’m not trying to be humble here, but they’re coding was quite impressive ( yes, i suck at coding flash actionscript ).
During the presentation session, panels ( from other faculties and university ) goes from booth to booth. At each group, they asked a lot of questions and throw quite a lot of uneasy comments. During my presentation… they didn’t ask anything and was quite quiet most of time. I’m was quite confused with that reaction, don’t know whether they think the system was so good or it speechlessly horrible sucked. One of them did ask a question about have I tested this site online ( because I said that this site loads VERY fast ), and I replied “IT IS online now. It’s fast rite? Impressive, ey?”. lol.
Muharram was at their back, and saw the score sheets when they reviewed us. He told us that we got high scores and the score gap was extreme. But, it’s Muharram here, he loves to toy us around so I didn’t take it seriously.
After the presentation done, all I wanted was to pack up and GO HOME. I didn’t feel that we’re going to win and I don’t wanna waste my time there. We were not allowed to leave the place until the whole event’s over ( there’s Dean’s list award going on in the hall too ). There’s GACC2008 appreciation dinner too later at that night. My team leader convinced me that we “might” win. Fine… I’ll walk around more and look at others’ project.
So, I go take a look at IT groups. IMPRESSIVE. Still, design sucks but who cares? The coding was EXTREME. All the systems were running on ASP but the design was done… in Frontpage… Yes, sad. But, don’t forget about the extreme coding. There’s group made a online game system to manage ‘Ragnarok Online’ inventory. It was pretty impressive that I thought they’re going to win. Well, they did. They won for the Best IT but failed to win the best overall. Honestly, I think they deserved it more than us.
So, when they announced the winner, I was really shocked. I was shock knowing that the simple system that I did WON an award. Ok, so, we won the Multimedia award. Then, when they announced the Best Overall IT winner, I was completely shocked beyond my belief that I thought I missed heard it ( because I was still busy “shocked” with my Multimedia award ).
Then our super cute supervisor won the best supervisor award. Congrats to her, she really deserved it. She gave us never-ending moral support T_T, especially when Suhaimi shot us down.
So, Mr Suhaimi, “IN YOUR FACE”. We won, dammit! MUAHAHAHAHA.
And, I don’t I’m going to show my project to others, because it’s embarrassing my crappy ~
*edit*
Ok. After being BUGGED and received several death threats, here you go, here’s my project. Tch. Leave me alone. Dammit.
The site is PicLens enabled. So, it would be great if you have PicLens plugin installed. And do please KILL the background music. It’s annoying, I know.
GACC2008 Appreciation Dinner
Seoul Garden. It was good. ‘Nuff said.
Pangea Day
I’m proud to say that I’m one of the hundred thousands of people who attended a Pangea Day gathering! “World Peace, bitch!”
Pangea Day was a celebration of the power of film. It featured films that were funny, sad, gorgeous, stark – and powerful. Voices that had never been heard before. Things many had never seen. Scenes from worlds few had visited. A cross-section of our amazing, complicated, noisy, beautiful world.
Besides four hours of pure entertainment, Pangea Day offered a view into other lives. After Pangea Day – after having experienced life inside so many other heads – we hope that many were moved to action. To become involved in pressing issues. To share their own video and photos. To join discussions that might move the world just a little bit further toward understanding.
The films in this program were chosen by Pangea Day’s panel from more than 2,000 submissions and a long roster of curated suggestions. Together, these films moved us, frightened us, made us laugh and smile, and helped us feel closer to the world.

Wilz organized a Pangea Day broadcast gathering in campus and thank God he organized one because watching Pangea Day alone would be meaningless without “other people”.
Overall, the event was not bad and some of the films were good. I’m quite disappointed a bit that they didn’t really emphasize on the “power of films” as much as I would imagine it would be. There’s dance, performance, talks and all, but I wanna see more “powerful films”. Oh well, this is the first one so I’m pretty sure they’ll improve in the future. They’re promoting world peace, and I support!
Again, I’m proud of be one of the hundred thousands of people ^_^
Ocha!
Me and a bunch a friends started on a new project : Ocha!, a blog about Japanese visual culture stuff. It’s a month old now, and I think it’s OK for me to announce it’s existence to my friends now. Just trying to make sure that this project doesn’t die like my other project, so I wanted to keep it low and wait until it’s ready.
Here’s the site : Click here
Why I started this? Because I want to continue serving the ACG community after I retire from my EMiNA Japanese Animation Club president post, and yeah, I’m retired now. I gave the burden responsibility to Khurshid now >:D
So far the contributors are me, NaviX, holycow, miso-soup, Ashlynne and lately, Silencers. We might get more volunteers in the future. Currently, the site is full of random worthless rants with worthy articles between somewhere between them. We’ll improve gradually.
So yeah, that’s Ocha!
Ocha!Subs
After 7 years, I’m back in the fansubbing world again. Yes, I’m fansubbing anime again.
“We” are and only will sub Toshokan Sensou. Why? Because there was no group who wanted to sub this worthy anime. It’s was really annoying, really. Then, finally “The Subbers Has No Name” ( THSNN )released their subs!
But before that, Ashlynne already translated the show for me. Oh yea, THSNN used her sub file too. Great, at least there’s a group subbing it.
But I had no idea wat took them so long to release each episode. Episode 3 has been aired and they only released 1 episode. I heard they wanted to release high quality subs, but we have Menclave to handle the quality releases and I don’t think they’re able to beat Menclave’s quality ( after seeing the EPIC quality subs of Gundam 00 ).
So, me and Ashlynne decided to release our own speed sub of Toshokan Sensou. I took her subtitle file, mux it with the raw files and viola: speed subbing! Specially released for who can’t wait.
Hence, Ocha!Subs are born. Initially there’s only 2 of us then there’s a lot of volunteers popping out from nowhere. We had a horrible distro problem when we released the first 3 episode, and these volunteers were really great at fixing that for us. Towards, the later episodes, our quality increased bit by bit. While waiting for translation files, I used the time to process the raw files. When I received the translation files, I will quickly go through it, mux it and release it to distro team.
Gotta thank Ashlynne for the translations, Silencers for the TL checking ( and his distro server ), XrayMind for the xvid encodes, linkinstreet for the karaoke files and the great distro team. Do your best, team! There’s only 12 episodes and after that, our pain will end and start leeching animes from other again.

Me. I’m doing fine.
After I retired from SPB and returned back to stay at my home home, things are quite different now. I’m a very free guy ( free doesn’t mean I’m not lazy ). Yes, I’m being lazy too. There’s nothing much I do at home now.
Download animes, watch animes. Sort my photo resources. Design stuff to add stuff in my portfolio. Mostly the things that I can do with my computer. I’m still sorting out GACC2008 photos that I need to upload to the server. The internet connection at home is quite crap nowaday.
I wanted to go out from the house and spend more time with my D80 at times, but seeing my car Suzie is dying, I canceled the plans many times. I just a 50mm prime lens that I wanna play around outdoor but.. sigh, Suzie not willing to drive me around.
I went up Cyberjaya Campus and KL more frequently than before too ( yes, with my camera of course ) to visit Ashlynne, Ganaesh, Fazri, Shaun and others. Can’t do this too much though, I have budget constrains.
I’m not getting much job offers lately. Too many graphic freelancers popping up in campus lately, and they’re offering free designs. Clients don’t care about good designs, they give price more priority. I can’t beat “free”, and I don’t want to give out free designs except for EMiNA. Need to find more money to pay my debts and repair Suzie’s driveshaft.
For this holiday, I feel like following any of my friends go back to their hometown IF someone offered. Preferably somewhere in the North area like Kedah, Perak or Penang XD. I’m really bored with Melaka.
Ok. That’s a long post. Good enough to leave it for another month un-updated. >:D
