Being Uncommon

I’m a lefthander. And this is a story me being a lefthander/leftie ( or in my term, a “lefthandie” ).

I wasn’t the first one to notice that I was a lefthander. My mom was the first one, when she saw me writing my name using my lefthand. I still remember what she said back then : “Eh? Abang kidal eh?” ( Eh, you’re a lefthander, ey? ). ( “Abang” means brother, sometimes my mom calls me that ). Since that day, it explains a lot why I prefer to use my left hand more than the usual right hand. This was before I entered kindergarten.

I had hard time using scissors back in school. I used to eat with my left hand. And a lot more other stuff using my left hand. Seriously, using normal scissors with lefthand is very hard while using it with my right hand felt..”weird”.

My grandpa used to scold me a lot of times when he saw me using my left hand to eat. We Malays use hand most of the time during meals. In Malay culture, left hand is considered to be the “shit hand”. Really. Life was quite “difficult”. But adapted… slowly I forced myself using my right hand for certain things. I use my right hand to eat now, I can even hold chopsticks properly with my right hand now.

Scissors, I had no choice but just continue feeling weird while using my right hand. Eventually, I got used to it.

And then.. comes the computer age. Oh great, say hello to “mouse”.

The first time I used a mouse was when I played with my cousin’s computer ( Window 3.1 was like the WOW back then, lol ). His mouse is obviously located on the right which forces me to use my right hand to operate it. His mouse was ambidextrous, but due wire constraints, moving it to the left was quite “mafan”.

Then, it was my time to get my own computer. I was in Standard 3 at that time. And guess what? My mouse is NOT ambidextrous.. it’s meant for righthanders/commoners T_T. I had no choice… I had to use it ( actually, I could just buy a new mouse but at that time, computer accessories in 1995 aren’t cheap like now ). Thanks to that, now I’m used to using my mouse using my right hand. That is really useful, really. At least, I don’t have to reposition the mouse just to operate a random computer.

Sigh.

But, despite the difficulties I went through, I’m proud to be a lefthander. I just feels great to be out of the ordinary. Some believed that lefthanders are more creative than the logical righthanders. Well, if it’s really true, then yeah, I’m proud to be more “creative” than “logic”.

I still write, knife and a lot more other things using my left hand. I also wear my watch on the right hand like normal lefthanders.

And OH, it’s EXTREMELY GREAT to find other lefthanders. When I entered MMU, I managed to meet a lot of lefthanders… Lefthanders are liek very rare in my school. Just to name some, Thye Shin, Ugi and Yuhi are lefthanders. Awesomeness.

PS: LEFTIES RULE. YA-HA!
  • I would say that you’re a true left hander.. :D
I’m a leftie as well, only that I do a lot of stuff, if not most, with my right hand.

I write and use chopsticks with my left hand. And so when it comes to eating with chopsticks at a table full of people.. It tends to get a wee bit uncomfortable, banging elbows here and there.

But yeh, I’m a proud leftie all the same :D

  • Yeah! /high fives

  • Can’t u use your right hand as your “shit hand”?

I supposed from your list of lefties, they’re quite creative.

  • A LOT of things are for right-handed people only. The stupid volume control on mobile phones is for the right thumb, the buttons on a camera are meant to be pressed with the right hand, the handycam is meant to be held in the right hand, hell even kitchen knives, pen knives, cutters, are made for right-handed people. And at restaurants, the cutlery are placed on the table for right-handed people. We smear our own handwriting because we have to write from left to right. And because a lot of things are suited for right-handed people, left-handed people are more prone to accidents due to “design” for right-handed people.

It’s a good thing that Apple takes lefties into consideration when it comes to product design. At least SOMEONE is looking after lefties.

  • Fear not, Mio Akiyama is a lefthandie too.. AND SHE RAWKS.

    MUAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHA

  • i’m a leftie too :D can’t do much with my right hand
